WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

On the 5th of each year many Countries across the world commemorate the WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY (WED). Initially the WED was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.It is a Special occasion for mankind to think about the impact of his activities on the planet earth.
I really appreciate the willingness of our government to make Mauritius a green island and to bring greater awareness in the population. Last Friday, a documentary on WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY was broadcasted on the MBC channel. We also had the launching of new books on the environment to be introduce as a new subject as from 2010 in schools at primary, Secondary and tertiary level
However, I believe that more can be done to bring greater importance of having this day observed in Mauritius. There is still a great number of Mauritian who did not know that Friday was the WED. Moreover making environment a new subject in schools will not be enough.
Do you know that we have more than 80 ways of observing this day? For example, we could have distribution of stickers to Motorist to sensitize people, a pacific walk in towns or green concerts. The government needs to encourage the ONGs too. In Mauritius it was such a passive way of observing this WED.
Introducing environment as a new subject to be studied will obviously have to be followed by examinations. This make the subject lose some of its interest in bringing greater awareness about the importance of preserving the environment. Remember that in many cases people cannot apply what they have learned in everyday life. Nevertheless it would be more efficient if the curriculum include many environmental related activities.
To make the earth breath better, there is a need for everyone’s contribution. So don’t think that your contribution is not important

  1. I agree with you. Me too I was not aware that Friday was WED. However, when it concerns environment and its protection, I think that everyday should be WED. Unfortunately, we cannot do so. There are lots of talks on protection of environment but little is done. One thing which I greatly liked was the imitative of the Municipality of Curepipe; the sorting of waste for recycling should be adopted in every towns and villages. Till the debate on the incinerator is over, I think that we all can do this much. But it is funny if we sort our waste and everything is being dumped in one place. The government should help all the Municipal and district councils to do the same as the Municipality of Curepipe.
