Fighting against Global Warming

Global Warming is the warming up of the earth. With global warming on the increase, species and their habitats on the decrease, chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing. We may even have adverse health effects from warmer temperatures. In general, No one need great introduction about Global Warming since everyone has heard about it, but the sad part is that, not everyone is willing to do something about it. If no action is taken, sooner our world will be much less pleasant and we can come across various natural calamities. At that time it might be too late.

As it is said ‘prevention is better than cure’. So, we as young people in the society, we should contribute a lot in creating awareness to people about the cost of global warming and try to reduce pollution. Why should it be us?? Firstly, we are well aware about its consequences and secondly, our future depends on our present.

In Mauritius, the government has already launched a campaign about the environment. I believe that we should add up to it and promote the use of products which cause no or little pollution in our society. If each country make a campaign as such and each every individual take the responsibility of protecting their environment then definitely pollution will be reduced significantly!!!

  1. Yeah, you're right. Just talking about global warming won't solve the problem. I believe that we cannot eradicate global warming because it’s a process which cannot be stopped. However, we can reduce its impacts on our society. Our island might have done little to trigger this problem but there is no doubt that we’re going to bear the brunt of global warming.

  2. Completely agree with whatever you said Shabneez and I guess that most people share the same point of view. Generally people do not pay attention when it comes to prevention of Global Warming because they think that it is a worlwide problem and they cannot really do anything about it. These people are wrong!!! I personally think that each individual can contribute toward reducing Global Warming, but how??? There are indeed many ways to prevent global warming and I've included four below that are simple and easy for you to implement right away. All four of these steps focus on reducing your energy consumption in order to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases you are personally responsible for generating.

    1) Minimize Drafts In Your Home - One of the simplest and easiest ways to prevent global warming is to make sure all your windows and doors are draft free. Small gaps in your windows and doors can cause you to consume a lot more energy than you really need to in order to heat and cool your home.

    2) Reduce wastage of electricity - When you eliminate phantom loads, you save a lot more electricity- and CO2 emissions- than you might imagine. A phantom load is caused when an electrical appliance draws electricity when it isn't in use. Amazingly, about 11% of residential electricity consumption is used by "phantom loads."

    3) Use more efficient light bulb - If every Mauritian household replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent one, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, then over the life of the bulbs 90 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions would be prevented from going into the atmosphere. This is like taking 6.3 million cars off the road!

    4) Turn Down Your Water - Just a 10° reduction on your water heater thermostat can reduce 3% to 5% of your total energy consumption. Most of us have our hot water heaters turned up far too high. You'll have plenty of hot water if you set your water heater between 110-120°F.

These words won't have an impact, unless WE get others to make these changes as well. But how would we do this....??? I really think that we should LEAD BY EXAMPLE. By making these simple changes you show the people around you ways to prevent global warming.

  3. I just wanted to add something to the 4 steps you’ve listed, Shehzaad. If everyone consumes fresh vegetables and fruits instead of buying these in cans, there will be no need to waste time, money and energy in manufacturing canned vegetables and fruits. It is such a simple and practical initiative. So, why don’t we do it???

  4. We can do it sheik, i really think that these steps are beneficial. It does not cost us anything, we do not have to spend money, neither we have to disburse more energy nor allocating part of our time to them.....these perfectly suits our daily lifestyle. The only thing we'll have to do is to adopt some new pinciples and eventually we will be contributing toward reducing Global Warming.

  5. I think we should sensitise our friends about this isuue so that when they go home, they can convince their parents in adopting these simple measures which contribute to a reduction in the impacts of global warming.

So, Shehzaad lets launch an "Awareness & Sensitisation Campaign on Global Warming" at CTI.

  6. Yes Sheik, you are right! We cannot exterminate global warming but we can at least do something to condense its consequences. Compare to 20 years back, the rate of literacy in Mauritius has increased and nearly everyone is alert about the ecological problem. Therefore, I believe that people in the society can make an effort in bringing positive thoughts for the environment.

As Shehzaad said, we can start reducing energy consumption following the four steps he mentioned and taking into account your idea of consuming fresh vegetables. All these will indeed help!!

That’s a very good idea Sheik; we should go for an "Awareness & Sensitisation Campaign on Global Warming" at CTI. I am with you!

  7. Why not my friend!!! Though the campaigm is somehow already launch for those visiting the blog, We now only have to think about how to create others awareness.

  8. this post seems too bias, .. need to scrutinize the real agenda behind global warming .. Is it a scientific fact that human CO2 is causing Global Warming?
